JACOB

*Patriarch.

Jacob was the son of *Isaac and the grandson of *Abraham. His exploits are described in *Genesis 25–36 and he was the father of twelve sons, the ancestors of the *twelve tribes of *Israel. In the rabbinic tradition, there was a strong tendency to interpret Jacob’s conduct in a good light and in the *midrash he is therefore portrayed as a reasonably virtuous character (See also *ISRAEL, *PATRIARCHS).
