Dictionary of Biological Psychology
ISOTONIC describes a solution of equal OSMOTIC PRESSURE to INTRACELLULAR FLUIDS: bathing a CELL with an isotonic solution produces no net flux of water across the cell MEMBRANE.
HYPERTONIC: more concentrated than isotonic: bathing a cell with a hypertonic solution will cause water to move out of that cell. HYPOTONIC: less concentrated than isotonic: bathing a cell with a hypotonic solution will cause water to move into that cell.
