A Popular Dictionary of Judaism
Prophetic book of the *Bible. It is generally agreed that the Book of Isaiah is the work of at least two different authors. The first Isaiah lived in the 8th Century BCE and is mentioned in II*Kings 19–20 and II*Chronicles 26 and 32. He is thought to have written Chapters 1–39 in which he protests against injustice.
He rejected all alliances with neighbouring states and insisted that *God alone was the source of salvation. Even when disaster struck, he believed that a faithful *remnant would survive. Chs. 40–66 are the work of an unknown prophet writing during the time of *exile in Babylon and include the *Servant songs. It is possible that more than one writer contributed to Chs. 40–66—hence the terms Deutero-Isaiah and Trito-Isaiah.
