Precepts (q.v.) is a vow to train oneself to avoid those intoxicants which tend to sloth, on the ground that as it is difficult enough at all times to remain ‘mindful and self-possessed’ it is foolish to make the task more difficult with alcohol. For those who meditate deeply, all alcohol is bad as it affects the finer sheathes of the tissues of the brain.
