Dictionary of Biological Psychology
The inferior colliculus in the MIDBRAIN is receiving direct input from the IPSILATERAL dorsal division of the COCHLEAR NUCLEUS and from the CONTRALATERAL and ipsilateral nuclei of the LATERAL LEMNISCUS. It is a mandatory way station of the auditory pathway to the MEDIAL GENICULATE BODY.
The central nucleus of the inferior colliculus is tonotopically organized (see TONOTOPIC REPRESENTATION) and specifies auditory spatial maps in the SUPERIOR COLLICULUS from BINAURAL information it receives from the BRAINSTEM. It likely provides temporal processing relevant for PITCH perception. The external nucleus of the inferior colliculus is the origin of the extra lemniscal pathway to the THALAMUS and CEREBRAL CORTEX.
