Dictionary of Environmental Health
The process of burning waste under controlled conditions to either reduce its bulk or denature toxic or hazardous characteristics. The term usually refers to the process of direct incineration, in which the calorific value of the waste itself is utilised during burning.
Direct incineration is often associated with production of heat or power. Variations of the incineration process are being developed in which the objective of heating the waste is not its direct incineration.
