Dictionary of Biological Psychology
An agent for producing a LESION that is made by combining a toxin (often a protein synthesis inhibitor) with a MOLECULE (an ANTIBODY or RECEPTOR BINDING agent) that will be specifically recognized by a cell surface receptor or ANTIGEN.
The interaction of the immunotoxin and its binding site on the cell surface enables the toxin to gain access to the internal environment of the cell, leading to its death; see SAPORIN for an example of this.
