HOSHANAH RABBAH

(Hebrew ‘The Great Hosanna’) The seventh day of the festival of *Sukkot. Traditionally Hoshanah Rabbah was regarded as the day when *God’s decrees are finally sealed.

In the *Temple, seven circuits (*Hakkafot) were made around the altar carrying the *lulav. Now the *bimah is circulated in the *synagogue and after the seventh circuit, willow branches are beaten on the ground. There is a widespread custom of sitting up the night before Hoshanah Rabbah to read through the whole *Pentateuch (See *SUKKOT).
