A Popular Dictionary of Judaism

HOSEA

A *minor prophet of the Hebrew *Bible. The Book of Hosea was produced in the *Northern Kingdom in the 8th Century BCE and contains an account of the *prophet’s marriage to an unfaithful woman and the birth of his three children.

This relationship is understood as a symbol of *God’s relationship with faithless *Israel (Chs 1–3). In Chs 4–14, which may well have a different author, the prophet condemns *idolatry and moral corruption. The book ends with a plea to turn back to God.
