HOLY OF HOLIES

Inner shrine of the *Temple in *Jerusalem. The Holy of Holies was only entered by the *High Priest once a year on *Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement).

It had no windows and a raised floor so it was the highest spot in the Temple. Here the *Ark of the Covenant was kept and it was regarded as the most holy spot in the Jewish world. (See also *TEMPLE).
