HILLEL

(Early 1st Century CE) Sage of the Second *Temple period.

Hillel was president of the *Sanhedrin and formulated the seven rules of *hermaneutics. He was the last of the pairs (*zugot) of scholars with *Shammai and his school (*Bet Hillel) was considered to be more lenient than that of *Bet Shammai. He was the author of the saying ‘What is hateful to you, do not unto your neighbour; this is the entire *Torah, all the rest is commentary.’ (See *BET HILLEL AND BET SHAMMAI).
