Herman & Polivy restraint scale
Test designed to measure the construct of RESTRAINED EATING. The restraint scale was published by C.Peter Herman & Janet Polivy (1980) with 10 items measuring weight fluctuation (four items) and concern for dieting (six items). Restrained eating refers to the degree of chronic dieting. Concern for dieting includes attempts to restrict food intake below a normal or desired limit, and episodes when restraint is abandoned. Therefore, when restrained eaters are given a pre-load of food they consume more than restrained eaters given no pre-load (COUNTER-REGULATION). Subsequent measures of restraint uncouple dietary restriction and tendency to overeat (see Lowe, 1993).
