HASIDIM

(Hebrew. ‘the pious’) Those who led pious lives.

In the Talmudic period the hasidim ha-rishonim (‘the just and pious men’) were famous for their *ritual purity and scrupulousness in obeying the *mitzvot. The hasidim ve-anshei ma’aseh (the ‘pious who were also men of action’) were notable for their good deeds and miracle working. Although the hasidim were always admired, the *sages stressed that intelligence as well as piety were necessary to be pleasing to *God. (See also *HASIDISM)
