granule cells

There is more than one group of granule cells in the brain.

One set is in the DENTATE GYRUS: these give rise to MOSSY FIBRES which innervate (see CA1–CA3) in the HIPPOCAMPUS. A second set of granule cells form DENDRODENDRITIC SYNAPSES with MITRAL CELLS in the OLFACTORY BULB and are crucial to the role of the olfactory bulb in olfactory LEARNING (see OLFACTION). A third set are in the CEREBELLUM, where a very great number of granule cells sit beneath the PURKINJE CELLS and emit axons to form the PARALLEL FIBRES of the cerebellum.
