Dictionary of Environmental Health

global warming

The common term applied to the phenomenon more properly known as ‘global climate change’.

The phenomenon is by no means universally accepted as a fact but the basic concept is that GREENHOUSE GASES in the earth’s atmosphere trap heat from the sun, creating a ‘greenhouse effect’. This causes the sometimes catastrophic disruption of weather and climactic conditions, and could result in melting of the polar ice caps causing flooding to lower-lying coastal regions of the world with commensurate knock-on effects for the planet’s ecology.
