Dictionary of Biological Psychology

Gerstmann syndrome

A constellation of deficits identified by Josef Gerstmann in the 1930s.

It includes AGNOSIA, LEFT-RIGHT CONFUSION, AGRAPHIA and ACALCULIA. Initially it was thought to involve damage in the region of the ANGULAR GYRUS but there is now doubt about the ability to localize these deficits, and indeed it has been argued that the syndrome should not be recognized any longer.
