gear

A machine part that transmits the energy from one moving part of a machine to another by means of a toothed wheel intermeshing with another. Gears are usually of different diameters ensuring that the number of rotations of the driving shaft is transformed into a different number of rotations on the driven shaft.

The smaller of two intermeshing toothed wheels is known as the pinion, the larger as the gear. The relationship of the rotations of one shaft to another is known as the gearing.
