A Popular Dictionary of Judaism
Four types of plant which are used for the *Sukkot liturgy. According to the Book of *Leviticus 23:40, the fruit of goodly trees, palm branches, leafy boughs and willows should be used.
The leafy boughs are understood to be myrtles and the fruit is the *etrog. The three branches are bound together and known as the *lulav and held in one hand while the etrog is held in the other. There is no general agreement as to the symbolic meaning of the species. (See *SUKKOT).
