fly ash

Finely divided particulate matter emitted to atmosphere or deposited within chimneys and flue linings, being derived from combustion processes, especially those involving coal. Fly ash can contain portions of unburnt fuel as well as toxic chemicals emitted or created during the combustion process.

Fly ash is nowadays usually removed and collected from flue gases before it can be discharged to atmosphere. Disposal of fly ash containing toxic material however needs careful control. Some fly ashes have POZZOLANIC properties.
