Field of discourse

See also concept mapping, register

The ‘field of discourse’ is an aspect of its ‘register’ and is concerned with the topic or content of a spoken or written text.

There is a close link between the topic or content and the vocabulary used in a text. When easing children into the ‘field of discourse’ of a new topic teachers often invite ‘brainstorming’. Here the words and concepts associated with, for example, volcanoes, the Vikings or electricity are identified and made into a concept map or web.

This is the complete article, containing 89 words (approx. 1 page at 300 words per page).
