Fat is the major long-term form of ENERGY store. Fat cells contain TRIGLYCERIDES, complex lipid molecules.
The ongoing use of lipid molecules as fuel by body cells appears to provide one signal, albeit a relatively mild one, to the brain for HUNGER and SATIETY via the VAGUS NERVE. There has been some controversy as to whether levels of fat are actively regulated, in the sense that the brain monitors them and acts to keep them constant (whether or not their owner wishes this). However, there appears to be reasonable evidence that body fat levels are actively kept constant, at least after adulthood has been attained.
