The original Fascists governed in Italy from 1922–1943, and were characterized by extreme nationalism, antisocialism, militarism, and restrictions on individual freedom, with industrial activity controlled by the state. ‘Fascist’ is used insultingly to a public librarian in The Sleepers of Erin, by Jonathan Gash, and is again insulting in Absolute Beginners, by Colin MacInnes.
