A Dictionary of Epithets and Terms of Address

Fascist

Used as a general insult to anyone who is thought to be acting in an autocratic way, especially if that person represents a state-run organization.

The original Fascists governed in Italy from 1922–1943, and were characterized by extreme nationalism, antisocialism, militarism, and restrictions on individual freedom, with industrial activity controlled by the state. ‘Fascist’ is used insultingly to a public librarian in The Sleepers of Erin, by Jonathan Gash, and is again insulting in Absolute Beginners, by Colin MacInnes.
