Dictionary of Environmental Health
A state or condition of arable (i.e. crop-growing) land in which it is left untended for a period, usually for at least a year.
The state is an integral component of a crop rotation system in which the farmer works with the land, allowing natural recovery and replenishment of the land to take place in order to provide a sustainable future for the resource. Modern agricultural practice has reduced the reliance on leaving land fallow and the application of artificial fertilisers has been used to compensate for diminution in the reliance on natural recovery.
