Dictionary of Biological Psychology
More technically known as SYNCOPE, fainting is a transient loss of CONSCIOUSNESS, usually produced by temporarily reduced blood flow to the brain (more severe changes in blood flow—ISCHAEMIA—can produce more severe problems). Vasovagal syncope involves stimulation of the AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM and is typically produced by conditions involving PAIN, FEAR and high degrees of EMOTION.
