Biblical book of a 6th Century BCE *prophet. Ezekiel prophesied among the Babylonian *exiles from 592–570 BCE and consoled those in captivity after the destruction of *Jerusalem.
The Book of Ezekiel is the third book of the major prophets and contains a description of the divine chariot (*‘merkavah’) which was the basis of later *mystical speculations. It also includes prophecies of destruction written before the fall of Jerusalem. This is followed by predictions of disaster for the *gentiles, words of consolation for the *Jews and visions of the restored *Temple.
