Explanation text

See also genre, non-fiction

Explanation texts, one of the six kinds of non-fiction used in the 1998 National Literacy Strategy Framework for Teaching, explain a structure like that of a plant, animal or machine or a process like the working of the digestive system or of an engine. Following the renewed framework (2006), the Primary Framework for Literacy and mathematics, ‘explanation text’ has been taken into the ‘report’ category (see Medwell et al, 2007). David Macauley’s book The New Way Things Work which has clear, well-annotated diagrams of wheels, levers and all sorts of moving parts, shows both structure and function and is one of those inspirational explanation texts which appeal to a wide age range.

The CD-ROM version shows all the moving parts in action.
