EXODUS, BOOK OF

The Second Book of the *Bible, part of the *Pentateuch. The Book of Exodus describes the enslavement of the Israelites by the Egyptians, the early life of *Moses, the ten plagues, and the departure of the Israelite slaves from Egypt (the exodus).

This is followed by the drowning of the Egyptians at the Red Sea, the wandering in the wilderness and the revelation at *Sinai. Details of the *covenant between *God and *Israel are given, followed by the episode of the Golden *Calf. The Book is traditionally believed to have been written by Moses.
