Dictionary of Environmental Health
The process in which a body of water receives enhanced nutrients over a period of time. Eutrophication is both a natural and artificial process.
Natural eutrophication tends to be slower and occurs due to the leaching of naturally occurring ground nutrients by rivers and streams, and deposition in lakes and coastal areas. Artificial eutrophication occurs when nutrients from, for example, man-made fertilisers and sewage, are washed into bodies of water.
