ETROG

(Hebrew ‘Citron’) A fruit used in the ritual of the *festival of *Sukkot. During the services the etrog is held while the *lulav (‘four species’) is waved. During the Second Temple period the etrog was a popular symbol for graves, coins and *synagogue art. The etrog was often kept in a beautiful silver container. (See *SUKKOT).
