Dictionary of Environmental Health

erosion

Removal of surface layers of materials such as soil, sediment or rock from the land by the action of water, ice or wind.

The process is distinct from WEATHERING as the former simply transports materials from their site of origin to another place, while the latter requires some prior action to abrade or otherwise strip such surface material from a firm attachment. Erosion is sometimes known as DENUDATION.
