A Popular Dictionary of Judaism

EPHRAIM

One of the sons of *Joseph. Joseph had no tribe named after him; instead his double share went to his two sons Ephraim and Manasseh.

The tribe of Ephraim became very prominent in the time of the *Judges and when the *Northern Kingdom rebelled against the *Davidic monarchy, the king chosen, Jeroboam I, was an Ephraimite. So powerful did the tribe become that the 8th Century *prophets frequently referred to the entire Northern Kingdom as Ephraim (eg. *Hosea 11:8). The area occupied by the Ephraimites subsequently became the territory of the *Samaritans (See *NORTHERN KINGDOM, *SAMARITANS, *TEN LOST TRIBES, *TRIBES, THE TWELVE).
