Dictionary of Biological Psychology

emotional intelligence

An umbrella term that has been applied to a range of learned skills to do with EMOTION.

Included under this term are the following qualities: recognizing emotions; coming to terms with the emotions of others; expressing emotions in appropriate ways; regulating and controlling emotions properly; and using emotions appropriately. It is a term that raises intriguing questions about computers: if machines can learn and show intelligent behaviour, can they engage or use affective states?
