(9th century BCE) Biblical *prophet. Elisha was the disciple and successor of the prophet *Elijah and he prophesied in the *Northern Kingdom during the reign of Jehoram. He foretold Hazael’s accession to the throne of Syria and, on his instructions, one of his followers anointed Jehu King of *Israel to depose the house of Ahab (see II *Kings 2–9).
