Dictionary of Environmental Health

electron microscope

Uses electrons rather than light to examine a specimen. Magnification is achieved by focusing the electrons with magnets rather than lenses. Electrons have a much shorter wavelength than light. This enables much higher magnification, of up to around 300,000 times the original sample size, to be achieved. The image is displayed via a fluorescent screen or by photograph.
