A book of the *Bible; one of the five *scrolls in the *Hagiographa. The author is described as ‘Kohelet’ (Hebrew.

The preacher) and the book is a meditation on the meaning of life. Although the constant theme is ‘vanity of vanities, all is vanity’, the work ends on an optimistic note. It is read in the *synagogue on *Sukkot. Traditionally it was believed to have been written by King *Solomon, but was probably produced in the 6th/5th Century BCE.
