Dictionary of Biological Psychology

dorsal root

A body of nerves extending from the dorsal portion of the SPINAL CORD.

These roots arise bilaterally, at each segment of the spinal cord, from the dorsolateral surface of the cord. They are composed of the axons of SENSORY NEURONS whose cell bodies are found in the DORSAL ROOT GANGLIA. These sensory neurons are PSEUDOUNIPOLAR NEURONS, with cell bodies in the dorsal root ganglia: one branch of the process carries information into the spinal cord, the other branch having collected information from the body.
