A neurotransmitter in the brain; dopamine levels are reduced in patients with parkinsonism.
It is a direct acting sympathomimetic with effects on both α- and β-adrenergic receptors. Also, it increases cardiac output. The main use is in treatment of shock, but it is inactive orally and must be given by dilute intravenous infusion.
