A substance that increases the production of URINE by the kidneys. Many diuretics such as alcohol and CAFFEINE are ingested as part of the diet, but they may be administered therapeutically for the treatment of diseases such as OEDEMA. In susceptible individuals diuretics may contribute to adverse health conditions such as GOUT.
