distillation

The process of evaporation of a liquid and its subsequent condensation.

Distillation occurs both naturally and in industrial processing. The hydrological cycle is an example of natural distillation, whereas distilling spirits, the differential distillation of, for example, crude oil (a process using different evaporation temperatures to separate different constituents of the original liquid) and DESALINATION are examples of industrial application.
