House of Representatives
The Dáil Éireann (House of Representatives) is the lower house of the bicameral parliament, the Tithe an Oireachtas, in Ireland. It is currently made up of 166 members elected to represent one of 41 constituencies for a five-year term. In the current Dáil, elected on 17 May 2002, there are seven party groups (number of seats in brackets): Fianna Fáil (81), Fine Gael (31), Labour Party (21), Progressive Democrats (8), Green Party (6), Sinn Féin (5), Socialist Party (1) and other parties (13). At present 22 (13.3%) of the 166 members of the Dáil are women. The Dáil shares legislative responsibility with the Seanad Éireann but has sole responsibility for holding the government to account.
