diffusion

The physical dispersion, without chemical reaction, of one fluid material within another by the action of the movement of atoms or molecules of the two substances concerned. In terms of light, diffusion is the random dispersal of light waves caused or effected by a medium through which they have just passed.

Diffusion is used as a technique for altering the light from a light source in order to reduce glare or to produce a more even light distribution. The device used to produce diffusion is known as a DIFFUSER.
