Dictionary of Biological Psychology

diencephalon

The part of the brain that is continuous with the MIDBRAIN caudally, and with the TELENCEPHALON rostrally. The diencephalon consists of four parts: the EPITHALAMUS, THALAMUS, HYPOTHALAMUS, and subthalamus (see SUBTHALAMIC NUCLEUS). The epithalamus comprises the HABENULA and PINEAL GLAND.

The thalamus contains important relay nuclei for all sensory modalities except OLFACTION. The hypothalamus is essential for HOMEOSTASIS and MOTIVATION. It also regulates the release of HORMONES from the PITUITARY GLAND which is connected with the hypothalamus via the pituitary stalk. As part of the BASAL GANGLIA, the subthalamic nuclei are involved in motor co-ordination.
