Most school libraries use a version of the Dewey system of categorising books.
Children are taught from the earliest stages to look in the reference files, now often computerised, to find the allocated number of a particular book and then locate it on the shelf. Simplified Dewey systems often use colour to help children track down different subjects – history, geography and science. Older children can be asked to make task sheets or wall charts with simple instructions on finding a book to help younger children use the system.
