A Popular Dictionary of Judaism

DEUTERONOMY

The fifth book of the *Pentateuch. Deuteronomy contains *Moses’ review of events after the *Torah had been given on Mount *Sinai. This is followed by an ethical exhortation and a summary of Jewish law.

Moses then makes his final speeches to the Israelites including his blessing and an account of his death is given. It was probably a version of Deuteronomy that was found in the Temple in the reign of King *Josiah in the 7th Century. This prompted a thorough-going reform of the cult and a centralization of worship in *Jerusalem. Although traditionally of Mosaic authorship, the book probably dates from the 7th Century when it was ‘discovered’ in the Temple.
