A Popular Dictionary of Judaism

DEUTERONOMIC HISTORIAN

The editor and redactor of the Books of *Samuel and *Kings. The Deuteronomic historian is so called because he was influenced by the ideas of the Book of *Deuteronomy including the conviction that the one true *Sanctuary is in *Jerusalem and that the kings of *Israel and *Judah were judged by their faithfulness to the *covenant.

The books relate the history of the Israelites from the end of the period of the *Judges to the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians in 586 BCE. The editor was probably writing in the late 6th Century and was attempting to understand the cataclysmic events of his country’s history.
