Dictionary of Environmental Health
A non-radioactive ISOTOPE of hydrogen, possessing one proton and one neutron in its nucleus. It comprises around 0.015 per cent of natural waters and is used in some nuclear reactors as a MODERATOR. Deuterium, like hydrogen, forms water on combination with oxygen, the chemical formula being rendered as D2O, the compound being known as ‘heavy water’.
