Dictionary of Biological Psychology

deep brain stimulation

Literally, stimulation of structures relatively deep in the brain. Deep brain stimulation was initially used for the relief of TREMOR in PARKINSON'S DISEASE: ELECTRODE implants were made using STEREOTAXIC SURGERY under local anaesthesia into the THALAMUS or the SUBTHALAMIC NUCLEUS, structures whose activity is changed in Parkinson’s disease—resetting activity in these areas can give symptomatic relief.

The electrodes are connected to stimulators implanted beneath the SKIN (typically in the region of the collarbone), patients being able to control the stimulator using hand-held devices. Because deep brain stimulation was initially used for the control of tremor using electrodes in the thalamus, it has been known as TREMOR CONTROL THERAPY OF THALAMIC STIMULATION. The same technique has also now been used in the management of other conditions, including STROKE and spinal cord injury. It has also been used for the relief of chronic PAIN, under which guise it has also been referred to as NEUROAUGMENTATION.
