(11th–10th Century BCE) King of *Judah and *Israel. David’s adventures are described in the Biblical Books of *Samuel and *Chroniclesu. While King *Saul was still alive he emerged as a great military hero, having been *anointed by the *prophet *Samuel.
He succeeded in uniting the *twelve tribes after Saul’s death and was king of both Israelite kingdoms. He dominated the surrounding people, made his capital in *Jerusalem and attained riches and power. Despite various crises within his family circle, he succeeded in handing on the crown of the united kingdom to his son *Solomon. In later centuries, David’s reign was regarded as a golden era and it was believed that the future *messiah would be of the Davidic line. He was also credited with composing many of the Biblical *psalms.
