DANIEL, BOOK OF

Biblical book among the *Hagiography.

It contains the story of the *Jew Daniel who is in exile in Babylon; his upbringing, his miraculous escapes from persecution and his visions of the rise and fall of empires are described. The book is exceptional in that much of it is written in *Aramaic and it probably should be dated in the 4th Century BCE. Daniel is also the hero of the *apocryphal books of *Susanna and the Elders and *Bel and the Dragon.
