Dictionary of British Education

culture

Culture refers to knowledge, beliefs and attitudes, passed on from one generation to the next, and by definition any society possesses a culture or way of life that members of that society share.

In a complex industrial society this transmission process is much more complicated than in a technologically and economically simple society. In a complicated society not all values and beliefs are held in common—there are sub-cultures within the major society—but there are always some cultural features held in common, i.e., a common culture, as well as sub-cultures.
